Pat was born in Upper Rawdon, Hants County, Nova Scotia, the fourth child of the late James and Mae Hill. She graduated from Hants County Rural High School, then from Mount Allison University with a BA, and subsequently earned a Master’s Degree at the Maritime School of Social Work. She worked at the Nova Scotia Hospital before marrying Don in 1967. They then set out on their journey of life together, living in four countries and nine cities while raising two children: Robb and Heather. In 1979 Pat and her family moved to Kanata, Ontario, where she worked as a Senior Social Worker at the National Defence Medical Centre until she and Don retired in 1997.
Pat’s fondest memories were of spending time at their cottage in Calabogie with friends and family; bridge; boating; golf; tennis; and, after retiring, touring North America in their RV and enjoying many relaxing cruises, especially a once-in-a-lifetime World Cruise in 2007. She was a member of the Kanata chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women for over twenty years, involved in advocacy, fundraising, and social activities.
Pat is survived by her loving and devoted husband Don; son and daughter-in-law Robb and Patti Wight; son-in-law Kevin Geddie; sister Anne Carroll; and grandchildren Annabel, Breanna, Colin, Ellie, Katie, and Ryan. She will also be sorely missed by nieces Lee Ann Coveyduc and Laurie Cossar, nephews David and Kevin Hill, and many wonderful friends. Pat was predeceased by daughter Heather, brother Gordon, and sisters Gwen and Sharon.
Pat was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) brain tumour in 2016 and was operated on twice. Pat was a real trooper and throughout this stage of her life managed to retain her lovely smile and sustain her love of life. Because of the excellent care of all the doctors, nurses, and personal support workers, she was able to remain at home while fighting this terrible disease—our heartfelt thanks to all of you. The family would also like to express their deepest appreciation to all their wonderful friends who supported them throughout this difficult period.
A celebration of Pat’s life is postponed until next summer, when, hopefully, Covid-19 will no longer pose a health risk.
