It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of Mary, peacefully in her 96th year. She was surrounded by her family, staff and her extended family at New Orchard Lodge. Loving wife of the late Dr. Kenneth Winterton and loving daughter of the late Frederick and Maryann Rose of London, England. Predeceased by her brothers Frederick James, John and George, and by her sisters Lily Whymark (Bob), Alice Martell, and Irene Rutledge. Loving mother of Stephen and Lorraine (the late Gordon Hartley), and sister to June Candler (David) and Jennifer Rose. Survived by many nieces and nephews by whom she will be sorely missed.

Mary was a member of the “greatest generation” and saw out the war years serving first at Swynnerton as an inspector of naval ordnance. Work was carried out in “clean rooms” where chance explosions saw loss of life or limb. Later she served at the direction of London Transport, guiding buses in pitch black and foggy conditions during the blackouts and night time air raids. Not lacking in pluck, she later took flying lesson in WWI vintage Gypsy Moths. She emigrated to Canada with her husband and children in 1955 and settled into a comparatively quiet life remaining a proud Londoner for the rest of her days but happy in her adopted home. Her family would like to thank the staff of New Orchard Lodge for their excellent care and the members of other families and friends who also made her time there happier.

There will be no visitation or service. Inurnment at Pinecrest Cemetery will take place later in the spring.

For those who wish, memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
