In Celebration of

Mary Cody

May 1, 1927 -  August 9, 2020

CODY, MARY (NEE CARROLL)
May 1, 1927 – August 9, 2020

Mary Cody passed away peacefully at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa after a brief illness.
She was predeceased by her son Patrick Paul Augustine Cody, parents Elizabeth Carroll (nee Evans) and Patrick James Carroll, her sisters Florence Keay and Kathleen “Kay” MacLeod and brother Vincent Carroll.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 69 years (1951) William John Cody, her son William James Cody (Lise), daughters Jayne Gogarty and Jo-Anne Cody, her much-loved grandchildren Krystal, Patrick and Kaitlyn Gogarty and her sister Irene MacDonald of Sydney, NS.
Mary was born in Whitney Pier, Cape Breton, the middle of 5 children, and became a registered nurse graduating from St. Martha's School of Nursing in Antigonish, NS performing nursing duties during the polio epidemic, flight attendant with Trans Canada Airlines and, later in life, an accomplished travel agent with Admiral Travel Agency. In 1953, she was stricken with polio but fought back in order to raise her firstborn and 3 additional children over the years despite contracting post-polio syndrome in the 1980's which sadly resulted in her return to life in a wheelchair. In recent years, mum remained very active. She created/led the bridge club at Valley Stream Manor and enjoyed the other community activities along with her beloved Bill.
The family has held a private funeral service. In lieu of flowers, please honour Mary by donating your time or money to the charity of your choice as she did over the course of her life.

Aunt Mary was a very kind and generous lady, who I will miss talking to. I enjoyed our calls, finding out what was new with her family and keeping her up to date with news about my family. She was always so sensible and so current with her views. She will be missed. Hugs ❤️

I have so memories of your wonderful Mom. My first memory is your and my parents sitting in our living room discussing the sale/purchase of the lot that your family built your home on. I remember learning then that both our Moms were nurses and I think that was the first signal that our Moms had a lot in common and I would have the opportunity to get to know your Mom. And being side by side neighbours with the ages of the kids in each family basically lining up was another reason that I had the opportunity to gain so many lovely memories of your warm, gentle, strong Mother. She will be dearly missed.
