Josephine Hopkins
June 1, 1932 – August 7, 2017

Our mother died on August 7 with the same courage, sense of adventure and determination by which she lived her life. Surrounded by close family, she ended her fight with cerebellar ataxia with the help of medical assistance in dying.

Born in rural England in 1932, she grew up through the hardships of the war, trained as a nurse at St. Bartholomew’s in London, set sail for New York to take a nursing job, and ultimately to Canada in the mid 1950’s. Here she met her husband John Hopkins at the NDG tennis club, created a home and raised a family which surrounded her with love to the end; her children Mark (Sheila), William (Emily), Amanda (deceased), Edward (Michelle) and Katie, and grew to include 7 grandchildren, Owen, Ben, Chris, Sophie, Jack, Keegan and Jeremy.

Jo moved frequently from Montreal, to Toronto, Ottawa, back to England, out to BC and ultimately to the Yukon where she and John arrived in the 1980’s, taking care of all the logistics herself. This was the place she loved the best, with its natural beauty and its wildness. She loved being active outdoors, hiking the Chilkoot trail in particular, and became an early proponent and lifelong lover of the Yukon Quest dog sled race in which her son Ed continues to compete. She was a generous volunteer- with the Yukon Quest, a local Fire Department volunteer, Grandmothers to Grandmothers and many other worthwhile causes.

A celebration of Jo’s life will take place on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 3:00pm at Pinecrest Remembrance Centre, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
