In Celebration of

John (Joe) Leggett

July 12, 1921 -  September 28, 2020

At the age of 99 years Dad passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday Sept. 28, 2020. He is predeceased by our Mom, Ruth Leggett, the love of his life and best friend. Dad is survived by his children Joan (John), Jim (Susan), Bob (Doris) and Tom; his 7 grandchildren, 11.5 great grandchildren and his 6 nieces and nephews.

Dad entered WWII at the age of 21 and distinguished himself as a fighter pilot for the RCAF in the 412 Squadron and later for the RAF in the 1435 Squadron stationed in Malta. Towards the end of his tour Dad also was part of the RAF Balkan Air Force covering the then Yugoslavia, Albania and Northern Greece. Dad loved flying and being a pilot.

After the war he went to Guelph University to obtain his degrees in agriculture and teaching. His first teaching position was in the small town of Tilbury Ontario where his agricultural background came in handy as in addition to his teaching duties, he was also in charge of the school chickens. After a few years in Tilbury, Mom & Dad moved back to their home town of Ottawa with Dad taking positions at Ottawa Tech, Laurention High School and then finishing off the last 25 years of his career at Lisgar Collegiate as Head of the Physical Education Department, coincidentally Dad had been a student himself at Lisgar.

The Family would like to thank Dr. Robert, Dr. MacDonald and all the staff from Ottawa 2 East at the Perley Rideau Veteran`s Health Centre for the care and compassion they showed Dad, it is truly appreciated.

Dad will not only be deeply missed by our family but also by the many students he taught over the years, and his many associates and friends. He was a kind and generous soul.

Good-bye Dad, you are now with Mom, we love you both!!

Due to Covid restrictions a memorial service will be decided at a later date. Online condolences may be made on John’s online guest book at www.colefuneralservices.com.

John was a gentle man. I had the privilege of visiting him at the Perley numerous times. We had a number of conversations about his life in Guelph.

We will miss John

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Thank you for your service Sir. May you forever Rest in Peace and GOD SPEED.

Wes and I send most sincere sympathy to all the family in the loss of John, What a great chap he was - always friendly and cheery. Wes, as a post war fighter pilot, and he always had something about to chat or enjoy a good laugh.

Ruth and I were both active members of Miriam Unit so we had an additional connection and enjoyed the fellowship of meeting in the family home often.
Please know that we share with you now and say, “Remember the good times !”
