It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas James Short – Patriarch of our family.

Douglas waged a valiant battle with cancer and we are blessed that we were able to spend time with him without him incurring a long period of suffering. To the end he exemplified his life-long characteristics of determination, resilience, tenacity, courage and compassion for his family.

Born in Hawkesbury Ontario in 1929, he lived a full and healthy life for the majority of his 90 years. He was a first generation Canadian of Scottish heritage - the son of John Clarence Short and Isabel Robb Dunlop Short of Edinburgh Scotland. Douglas was the devoted father of Susan Elizabeth Short and James Andrew Short, both of Ottawa, and the immensely proud grandfather of Renelle Suzanne Short and Laura Norma Short. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and shared a special bond with Barbara McCarroll of San Francisco California. He has now gone to be reunited with his beloved Norma Angela Short (nee Rowan).

Douglas joined the CNR as an apprentice in 1945. Though his career evolved into that of a professional manager he never lost his love for building everything from cabinets to cottages. He was also a mechanic, loved to travel and was a fan of horse racing.

A service will be held to honour his contributions to lives of family and friends on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Pinecrest Remembrance Centre, 2500 Baseline Road, at 2:00 p.m.
