Diego Sebastiano D'Elia

Peacefully on April 4, 2019 at the age of 89. Dear husband of Giovanna, cara Papa of Angela and dear Nonno of Renata. Pre-deceased by beloved daughter Celestina and much-loved nephew Raymond. Born in Ovindoli, L’Aquila Italia, Diego was the oldest son of Raimondo and Celeste D’Elia. He so loved his sisters Maria (the late Remo Rantucci), pre-deceased by Bianca (the late Gino Torelli) of Sydney, Australia, and brother Piero (Giovanna) of Rochester, N.Y. Caro Zio of Rita, Mario, Rossano (Sydney) and George (Rochester). He is also survived by cousins in Italy and California. Like many young Italian men of his generation, Diego left home at an early age to help support his family. At 16, he worked in France and later, with the support of his beloved Zio Ulderico, immigrated to Australia. God bless Zio Ulderico and Zia Essie. He and Giovanna married in Sydney, where Celestina was born. They immigrated to Ottawa in the mid-60’s and had their second daughter, Angela. Diego was a kind and gentle man who took pride in his appearance - never a hair out of place. He also was passionate about reading, politics and loved to cook. Special thanks to Virgilio Panetta for all your support, and to the wonderful team at the Ottawa Carleton Dialysis Clinic. Family and friends may pay their respects at the Pinecrest Visitation Centre, 2500 Baseline Road on Monday, April 8, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in the Chapel at 1:00 p.m. Entombment to follow in Mausoleum of Peace & Tranquility at Pinecrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

“Rest now Papa. May you spend eternity with all those who were there to receive you, especially Celestina. May your journey bring you back to the mountains of your beloved Ovindoli, and to Sydney to enjoy a pint with your mates”
