ARNOLD, Vernon Murray
Retired teacher - Laurentian High School
Auto Mechanics

Unexpectedly at his residence at 87 years of age on April 24, 2018. He is survived by his wife Beryl, and his daughter Laura. Also beloved Granddaddy to granddaughter Chloe, and great-grandchildren Mylo and April. Predeceased by his daughter Nancy, and his siblings Doris, George, Eric, Ruth and Harvey. Vern will be greatly missed by his extended family, many nieces and nephews, friends, former students and colleagues.

Born in December 1930 in Niagara Falls, ON, he was the last remaining member of the family of the late H.G. Arnold and Ethel Rhea Wilson, who owned and operated the Niagara Falls Boys College from 1922-1946. From such academic beginnings, Vern went his own way, pursued his passion for vehicles, and attended Trott Vocational School in Niagara Falls, NY, where he graduated with credentials in both Auto Mechanics and Machine Shop. Following a five-year career using his technical skills in the RCAF during the Korean War, and a few successful but unfulfilling positions, Vern decided to try his hand at teaching and obtained his Ontario Teaching Certificate in Toronto in 1959. Hired by the Ottawa Board of Education in 1960, he began his remarkable 27-year career at Laurentian High School. With his enthusiasm and love of subject, depth of knowledge, and extraordinary rapport with his students, he went on to have a substantial impact on many young lives as both a trades teacher and in latter years at Laurentian his involvement with guidance and student co-op placements. Many contacts extended until his last days. He worked hard, but lived his passion and loved every minute.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Pinecrest Visitation Centre, 2500 Baaseline Road, Ottawa, on Sunday, April 29, 2018 from 2-4 p.m. Any in memoriam donations may be made to Prostate Cancer Canada.
