Valda Daila Upitis
June 18, 1925 - May 10, 2018
Valda Upitis (nee Tilts) was born June 18, 1925, on a farm near Mazsalaca, a northern Latvian village, and died peacefully in Ottawa on May 10, 2018. Valda was one of four children of Anna and Peteris Tilts. She spent her formative years in Latvia. During World War II she lived in Germany, where she attended university in Frankfurt and studied microbiology. After the war, she moved to Ohio, where she worked in the domestic service and learned to speak English in the elegantly fluent style she was known for. Soon thereafter, Valda moved to Canada, and in 1953, she married Zigfrids Reinholds Upitis. They settled in Vancouver and had two children together, Rena and Ivar. For some time, the family lived in Alberta before moving to Ontario in the 1980s. Valda was extremely close to her family; she was wise and feisty, but above all, she was kind. Valda is survived by her husband Zigfrids, sister, Arija; her two children, Rena and Ivar (Sylvie); her five grandchildren, Brencis, Hayden, Kora, Marcis, and Zinta, her niece Sandi and nephew Andrew (June), as well as many relations in Latvia. The family would like to thank the staff at Alta Vista Manor for their care and devotion to Valda in her final years. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa, Ontario, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Valda’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
