Otto Hermann Heinrich Richard Haenlein of Ottawa, Ontario passed away suddenly on Monday, August 28, 2017 at the venerable age of 96.
Otto's formative years were spent in Hannover, Germany. When the Second World War began, he joined immediately, knowing he would be able to choose his trade. His air force career kept him out of the trenches, but as a navigator and bombadier, he was shot down twice. He met and married the love of his life, his beautiful ‘bride’, Ingeborg “Inge” Doufrain, during the war. Together they celebrated 72 years of marriage and the joy of raising two children: his son Otto Jr. (Milli) and daughter Sigrid (Len).
The end of the war brought Otto and Inge to Halifax and then to the Montreal area, where Otto became the vice principal of Centennial High School in Longeuil. Otto had a love of puzzles and carpentry, and cleverly taught himself the intricacies of the English language. He will be remembered for his bright mind and sharp wit, his love of a good joke, the twinkle in his eye at the mention of a good meal, and his gruff but loving way with his family.
Opa, as he was known to many, is already greatly missed by Inge, Otto Jr and Milli, Sigrid and Len, his treasured grandchildren Lauri (Tim Sullivan) and Kristi (Harvey Bankonin), as well as four amazing great-grandchildren: Braden, Alexa, Hannelore and Emmett. Sadly, he was pre-deceased by his beloved only grandson Mark (Vanda).
The family would like to thank the caring staff at both the Chartwell Kanata Retirement Residence and the Granite Ridge Care Community for all they did for Otto. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Mark Haenlein Memorial Fund at St. Mary's University would be appreciated. A memorial gathering for Otto will be held at Granite Ridge in Stittsville from 10:30 – 12:30 on Thursday, August 31st.
