Michael Lopez Albania

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Michael on Friday, January 3, 2020 – much too early, at the young age of 45. Despite the attentive care of health professionals at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, Michael unexpectedly succumbed to pneumonia complications. He was survived by his uncle Ernie (Rose), aunt Aida (Chu Chay) and cousins Jose, Stella, Hans and Melissa. The family takes comfort in the thought that Mike’s spirit is at rest with his recently departed sister, Alicia Albania, for whom Mike had been a dedicated caregiver and brother. Mike was also the son of the late Federico and Anita Albania, brother to the late Danilo Albania, and nephew to the late Avelina and Carmelita Lopez.Immigrating to Canada from the Philippines at age of 12, Mike embraced his adopted country, while cherishing his filipino cultural ties. In fact, just weeks before his passing, Mike had challenged his Ottawa cousins and niece to an eat-off of some of the more challenging filipino cuisine (balut). We did not accept his challenge! Mike had a fierce devotion and loyalty to family and close friends – including the canine babies of the family, Bailey and Ryu. This passion extended to his love of basketball and the L.A. Lakers, often proudly joking he “bled purple and gold”. May all your three-pointers be nothing but net in the afterlife up above, Mike. We will miss you. A visitation will be held at St. Maurice Parish (4 Perry St.) on Saturday, January 11 at 10 a.m., and a funeral mass at 11 a.m.. The burial will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery (2500 Baseline Rd.). In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
