Marjorie E ""Margie"" Petrunik
May 17, 1946 - August 22, 2016
Marjorie Elaine Petrunik, nee McMorris, was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on May 17, 1939, the 5th child and 2nd daughter of Eric McMorris and Inez Ashley McMorris.
After graduation from Camperdown middle school and St. Hugh’s High School, she and her sister, Jean (“Joy”), immigrated to the United States in 1959 to join their mother and older sister, Dorothy (“Jill”) who had settled in the Bronx in New York City.
Marjorie (or Margie, as she is called by family and many close friends) was drawn early in life to the field of education. She initially attended Hunter College in New York and subsequently graduated in 1967 with a B.A. in sociology from the University of Windsor in Windsor Ontario.
In 1969, Marjorie moved to Toronto Canada and married Michael Petrunik whom she had met as a student at the University of Windsor. She received her degree from Toronto Teacher’s College and began a long career in elementary school teaching first in Toronto and Guelph and later in Ottawa where she settled with her husband in 1975. Marjorie received her Master’s degree in Education from the University of Ottawa and worked as an elementary school teacher with the Ottawa Catholic School Board until her retirement. After retiring Marjorie worked as a volunteer at St. Patrick’s Home with patients in hospice care, many of whom suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. Marjorie was a tremendous support to these patients, providing friendship and comfort amidst their daily activities. She would read the newspaper to them, take them on daily walks, engage them in conversation and simply be a comforting presence in their lives.
Marjorie and Michael had two children (Jason Michael born in 1977 and Janna Krystyna born in 1979) and three grandsons (Ricardo, Miguel, and Francisco). She was a devoted mother and grandmother adored by her children and grandchildren and they in turn brought much joy to her life.
Marjorie built close friendships easily and was beloved wherever she went. She enjoyed being with family and friends and was part of a close circle of women friends (the “birthday club”) who celebrated special occasions together. Always welcoming and gracious and an excellent cook, Marjorie opened her home frequently to family and friends. Her Christmas and Easter dinners were legendary for their abundant and delicious food and conviviality.
Marjorie’s faith in God was unyielding. She embraced Christ’s teachings and they gave her guidance and comfort throughout her life.
Only two weeks after being diagnosed with cancer Marjorie died peacefully in her sleep on August, 22, 2016 in her own home. She is survived by her children Jason and Janna, her grandchildren (Ricardo, Miguel and Francisco), her sisters, Dorothy and Jean, her brothers, Neville and Easton, many adoring nieces and nephews, and her ex-husband Michael with whom she maintained a close friendship until the end.
