With great sadness and beautiful memories, the family of Maria Diamantopoulos announces her passing. Maria passed away peacefully at the age of 80, with her beloved family by her side and the sun shining upon her on December 7, 2019 at the Ottawa Hospital (Civic Campus).

Born June 18, 1939 on the island of Patmos, Dodecanese Greece, Maria grew up in a household with her mother and stepfather, always strong and independent as the eldest child and a caretaker to her brothers and sisters.

Maria immigrated to Canada in 1959 at 20 years old as an Au Pair and became an active member and lifelong valued contributor to Ottawa’s Hellenic Community, Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, Greek Ladies’ Philoptochos Society, Senior Citizens Association, and a Board Member of the Samian, Ionian & Aegean Islands Society. Predeceased by her husband Spiridon Diamantopoulos (1995), she leaves behind her children; Alexios and Vasilike Diamantopoulos, and grandchildren Christine, Luke, Anneliese, and Larissa Diamantopoulos. Maria was also a loved Aunt by many nieces and nephews in both Canada and Greece.

Post-retirement from a career with the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, she continued to be a giving member to Kanata’s school community as a crossing guard for elementary students, from which many will remember her happy personality and beautiful friendly smile.

Maria will forever be remembered as inspirationally independent, joyful, active, strong, confident, fun, kind, and sweet. She loved nothing more than her family, church, friends and community. Her gratefulness for a healthy life and family is undeniable. Her unsurpassed traditional Greek cooking was always accompanied by the sounds of classic Greek folk music and Greek television playing in the background and will be missed by her family’s bellies and hearts. Coffee dates will be missed by her friends and family. Her adventurous, playful personality and pride for her culture could be seen through her colourful wardrobe decorated with turquoise stones, pearls, and floral patterns. Her love for nature reflected through her ever-growing gardens, long walks with her beloved cat Feta, and adventures to Cuba, Costa Rica & beyond.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hellenic Community of Ottawa.
