GRATTON, Margaret Anne (nee Jurik)
Margaret Gratton, affectionately known as “Maman” passed away on Mother’s Day, May
14, 2017 at the age of 93. She was born on October 22, 1923 in Mojtin, Slovakia a small
village in the Tatra Mountains. Margaret was the oldest of 3 children and her family
immigrated to Canada in 1937. They arrived in Halifax and made their way to Toronto
where she met her husband Raymond Joseph. They married in 1948 then moved to
Ottawa where they had 5 children between 1950 and 1961. Margaret proudly retained her
Slovak traditions and language. She was an avid baker, gardener and herbalist and
maintained a strong bond with her Roman Catholic faith.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Josephine (nee Kucera), sister Ann and brother Frank
(Rosemary). She was also predeceased by her son Raymond Henri, who died tragically in
1975. Margaret will be laid to rest beside him at Pinecrest Cemetery. Margaret is survived by husband Ray, children Elaine Towell (Garvin, deceased), Robert, Francois (Barbara) and Marguerite (Fraser). Maman is
also survived by grandchildren Julie (Jaime), Lainie, Ben (Aaron), Patrick (Teagan), Carolyn as well as great-grandchildren Jesse, Danika, Charlotte, Julianna and Kohen.
The funeral will be held at Saint Bonaventure Church, 1359 Chatelain Avenue at 11:00 a.m.
on Saturday, May 20 followed by reception in the parish hall.
