<div itemprop="description">Dr. Lawrence (Larry) Walter Sobczak, P. Eng., 81, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2017 at 9:30 p.m., after a long struggle first with Lymphoma (non-Hodgkins) cancer from 2001 which he overcame in 2010 and then with prostate cancer in 2013. He is survived by his family who loved and respected him greatly: his wife Marion (nee Musoronchan); and his three children Sharon (Albert Cloutier), Christopher, and Craig. Dearly treasured and admired by his five grandchildren Gordon, Johnathan, Nickolas, Brad and Derek. Survived by his brother Edward (Lorraine) and sisters Lillian Campbell and Gail, along with many relatives in Canada, USA and Poland. Predeceased by his brother Michael, he joins him and his parents Mary and Thomas in Heaven. <br>Lawrence was born in Toronto, Ontario. He earned his pilot's license at the age of 17. He graduated in 1959 from the University of Toronto studying Engineering Physics with a major in Geophysics. In 1959, he joined the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources in Ottawa, specializing in gravity retiring in 1991. During his career, he measured gravity across the country and spent many years in the Arctic working on the Polar Continental Shelf Project. Over the Arctic Ocean he measured gravity and took water depths using explosives and then sounders. He authored over 100 peer reviewed scientific papers and maps. He, along with his co-developer John L. Halpenny produced the first Enhanced Isostatic Gravity Anomaly map with the Horizontal Gradient. During his lifetime, he was also fond of designing and building multiple housing units. He created, owned and operated Sobczak Christmas Tree Farms in Carleton Place and Whitby. He vacationed in the summer at his cottage on Sharbot Lake, and in the winter at his home in North Fort Myers in Florida. <br> <br>Family and friends may visit at the Pinecrest Visitation Centre (2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa) on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. <br>A Funeral Service will follow in the Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel. <br>Entombment to follow at Pinecrest Cemetery followed by a time of refreshments and fellowship in the Pinecrest Solarium. <br>In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would appreciated by the family. <br></div>
