BRENNAN, Kathleen Mary

Kathleen passed away peacefully on Friday, May 19, 2017 at the Ottawa Hospital (Civic Campus) surrounded by her family. She succumbed from injuries sustained after an accidental fall that took place on May 2, 2017 in a public park in the beautiful city of Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Kathleen was born on December 12, 1993 in Ottawa, Ontario where she lived her entire life. She was a loving daughter to Edward Patrick Brennan and Mary Joanne Brennan (nee Donovan), a devoted sister to Maureen Anne Brennan, and adoring life partner to Stewart Walter Cattroll. She is survived by a large number of relatives and friends who treasured her and will miss her greatly.

She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Carleton University in Ottawa in 2015. At the time of her death she was pursuing a Master’s in Globalization and International Development at the University of Ottawa. She worked for the Fratelli family of restaurants for the past eight years.

Kathleen had an irrepressible zest for life. Her friends and family will all readily admit to never having met anyone with more bubbling energy, enthusiasm and curiosity about people and places. When Kathleen entered a room she immediately made her presence known with her loud voice and infectious laughter, and sought out anyone she didn’t know so she could make their acquaintance. She had no fear of strangers or the unknown, and had a great gift of being able to connect with people and easily make friends with just about anyone.

She developed a love for exploration, travel and experiencing different cultures early on in life when she travelled to El Salvador with her high school as part of a trip to express solidarity with the struggles of the people of the El Salvador. Since that time, Kathleen travelled as much as she possibly could and visited more than 20 countries. At the time of her accident she was part way through a trip through Eastern Europe.

No description of Kathleen would be complete without a reference to her immense love for music and animals. She loved all types of music, but had a particular fondness for classic rock. She could be found at every vinyl record show across Ottawa haggling with dealers for the best possible deal on a Pink Floyd or a Led Zeppelin record. She also had an incomparable level of compassion for animals of all types. She tried to befriend every animal she met and always had a soft spot for the malnourished cats and dogs she encountered on her travels and would happily share her lunch with them. Her life philosophy can be summed up as “I travel the world to pet all the cats”.

Kathleen’s lasting legacy will be to inspire those who knew her to enthusiastically laugh, explore, travel and connect with others. She seized every day and lived life to the fullest. We would all be well served to follow her example.

A Celebration of Kathleen’s Life will take place at the Hellenic Meeting and Reception Centre, 1315 Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa, on Saturday, May 27th from 2pm to 5pm.
Memorial donations may be made to the Ottawa Humane Society.
