Georgina Phyllis Eastwood (Evans)

It is with great sadness that we announce that Georgie, wife of John Eastwood, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, September 25, 2017 at 12:40pm in the Ottawa General Hospital.

In 1966 Georgie graduated from the Brockville General Hospital School of Nursing. Georgie worked as a registered nurse in Ontario and Quebec between the years of 1966 and 2002. Georgie and John took one another’s hand in marriage in May of 1968 in Smiths Falls. Their union lasted just shy of 50 years and remained strong and loving right until the end…a true testament to their mutual love and devotion.

In late 1968 they moved to Sudbury and had three (3) children - Stephanie (1969), Jonathan (1972) and Christopher (1975). After Sudbury, they lived in a variety of locations: Mississauga (ON), Brossard (PQ), Ottawa (ON) and Kirkland(PQ). John and Georgie built their retirement home in Ottawa in June 2003. Georgie moved in to Thorncliffe Place retirement home in February 2017.

Georgie was an incredible mother to Stephanie (Chiasson), Jonathan (Eastwood) and Christopher (Eastwood), and daughter in-law Angela Ammendolea (Eastwood). Georgie will be dearly missed by her 5 loving grandchildren; Chloe, Evan, Ava (Chiasson) and Hannah, Patrick (Eastwood). Georgie was the beloved sister to Beverley Campbell (David Campbell pre-deceased) and daughter to parents Irene and Henry Evans (both pre-deceased).

For over half of her life Georgie suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and lived with severe chronic pain. Our family is comforted by the fact that she is at peace and no longer suffering. Georgie had a passion for life and enjoyed every moment she could with family and friends. Never a complaint, and always enjoying life to its fullest - Georgie was a loving, kind, wise, perceptive and empathetic soul…truly an amazing role model to everyone. Georgie was the ultimate soldier, never succumbing to her own challenges, and forever there to support those around her in need. She will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.

Our family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the many nurses, doctors, and other health care professionals who took such wonderful care of Georgie this summer while she was at the Queensway Carleton Hospital (D3 floor and ICU), the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital (ICU) and at Thorncliffe Place retirement home during her brief stay.

We also wish to express our sincere thanks to Georgie’s primary pain management specialist, Dr. Cathy Smyth (Pain Clinic - General Campus), for her ongoing support to manage Georgie’s pain which was extremely challenging at the best of times.

For those who wish to recognize Georgie by way of a donation, please go to the Arthritis Foundation website.
