In Celebration of

Donald Andrew Smith

November 13, 1935 -  November 23, 2020

On November 23, 2020, Donnie Smith passed away peacefully at home, with his family at his side, at age 85.

Beloved husband for 53 years to Angie (Gaffney). Loving dad to Cheryl and Greg. Predeceased by parents Percy Smith of Valcartier, QC, and Marie (Ryan) of Chapeau, QC. Dear brother of Brian (Lynn); sisters Ann Saunders (Gary) and Gayle Savery. Fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews and great-nieces/nephews.

Originally from Valcartier, Donnie moved to Ottawa in 1956. He worked at the Carlingwood branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia when it first opened. He later worked in construction for most of his career as a supervisor at W. Rourke Ltd. His last years of working before retiring were spent at Bytown Lumber.

Donnie loved the outdoors and staying active, bowling and curling in the winter months, and golfing and gardening from spring to fall. His gardening skills began with moving things wherever Angie told him to, but he quickly developed interest in the colour and scents of the plants as their garden expanded with each year. Donnie was an avid reader and could devour a book in a matter of hours. He was known for his jokes and humourous stories, daring euchre moves, and ability to DIY just about anything.

Special thanks to Champlain LHIN, Bayshore Healthcare, St. Elizabeth Nursing, and Dr. Paul Hacker for their compassion and support that allowed Donnie to be cared for by his family at home.

For those who wish, a donation in Donnie’s memory to the St. Elizabeth Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or the Ottawa Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

A private funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 30, 2020, at St. Maurice Parish, Ottawa. Due to COVID-19, attendance will be restricted. Please contact the family should you wish to attend the mass. Entombment will follow.
