STANGER, Charles Thomas (June 4, 1924 – February 14, 2019)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Charles (Chuck) Thomas Stanger on February 14, 2019. Beloved husband of the late Laura May Stanger (nee Harris), adored father of Judy (Rick Hendershot) and John (Sandy and son, Corey Andrews) and grandfather-in-law of Jody MacDonald and Nicole Stanger. Cherished Papa to Peter Hendershot (Jay), Andy Hendershot (Robin), Martha Miller (Scott), Amy Ferguson (Scott) and Aaron Stanger, as well as his great-grandchildren Alex, Amanda, and Nicole Hendershot, Alice, Grace, Liam, and Jack Miller, Cameron and Jamie Ferguson, and Leah Stanger.
Charles was predeceased by his wife Laura May Stanger (1924-2015), his brother Frederick William Stanger (1919–2008) (Marion Olive), his father Arthur Stanger (1889–1967) and his mother Elsie (nee Upton) (1889-1976). Charles grew up in Edmonton, Alberta where he enjoyed many sports and was active in Boy Scouts. When he was 19, Charles joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Corporal (Service Police) R260773 and served from 1943 until 1947. When he was stationed at Camp Borden in Ontario he met a payroll officer named Laura Harris whom he would soon marry. While still in service Charles was stationed in Whitehorse, Yukon. This is where he and Laura started their family. He was honourably discharged in 1947 and awarded the Canadian Voluntary Service Medal and the Canadian Interim Service Medal.
After graduation from the University of Manitoba, Charles was ordained as a minister in the Anglican Church of Canada. He and Laura served several years ministering to indigenous communities in Yukon and Alberta. The family moved to Ontario in 1959 where Charles ministered in parishes in Hamilton, Ridgeway and Bertie. For the next 18 years and until his retirement in 1989, Charles served as a Social Worker with Family and Children’s Services of Renfrew County in Pembroke, Ontario.
Following their retirement, Charles and Laura enjoyed travelling and spending time at their winter home in Florida. Their favourite activity was dancing their way through several levels of Fred Astaire ballroom dancing. They also enjoyed the social life at Goldtree Retirement Community in Bradenton.
Unfortunately Charles suffered a massive heart attack in 1997. After making a remarkable recovery, Charles enjoyed watching hockey and football, reading, listening to music and researching subjects of interest in his medical books. He looked forward to visits with his 2 children, 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Pinecrest Visitation Centre, 2500 Baseline Road on Tuesday, February 26 starting at 12 noon. A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel at 2 p.m., followed by inturnment and a reception. Donations gratefully accepted to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
