Words cannot express our profound sadness in announcing the passing of Brent Schwieg at his home in Kinburn, Ontario under the gentle care of his wife Carrie and close watch of their five adult children and their families.

Brent was a young and energetic 59-year-old, born in Barry’s Bay. Loving husband to Carrie, an amazing dad to Dan, Mat, Luc, Tyler and Brittany. Cherished brother to Brenda Champagne and Leon Schwieg(Barb). Proud pappy to Freddie, Kiana and Ollie.

Brent was raised in Brockville, Ontario, and truly enjoyed spending summers there with Carrie in Butternut Bay. He cherished his memories of summers at the family cottage in Combermere spending time with his many cousins and family. Brent moved to Drumheller after high school and worked as a correctional officer and welfare officer in the federal medium institutions. He moved into a training position after his frontline work. The Correctional Service of Canada requested his service, in Ottawa, to lead the corporate design and implementation of an integrated competency-based human resource model across the organizations five regions. Following that employment experience, Brent proudly worked at the House of Commons as the Deputy Director of Security Services. Brent presently worked for Ottawa Community Housing as Director of Strategy and Governance, and as a critical member of the senior leadership team. He was described there as being an inspiring leader with a calming influence on the organization and was committed to forming solid working relationships with a true gift for bringing people together.

His passion was his family, his work, and his 1800’s Victorian country home and 3-acre property where he worked the soil like a pioneer farmer, planting English style gardens, building patios, bocce yards, and tending to his apple orchard. He and his wife hosted annual Christmas and summer parties. He was a welcoming and entertaining host. Brent would work hard on policy and strategic plans by day and on the home or garden by night. Brent relished staying home with his beautiful wife Carrie surrounded by their cats in the country. He loved restoring their home (by his hand only), having his kids and three grandchildren around him, playing board games, sipping Chardonnay, listening to his favourite music, swimming in the pool and restoring antique chairs (there are a few!) He was living his dream each day. Sitting with Brent at his dining room table was a memorable experience; a traditional grand dining room set with Victorian-era fine china, laden with Carrie’s delicious food, the room full of laughter initiated by his dry wit and endless jokes.

Brent will be remembered as passionate about family, always guiding his children with a strong moral compass, with a soft voice and kind words. He was respected and admired by his work colleagues, friends, and family for his honesty and extremely hardworking personality. His legacy will be one of offering us all (always with humour) guidance towards being true to oneself. Focusing on family first, his love for his wife and family was immeasurable and a love he shared unabashedly.

Brent loved and respected nature, and he would diligently ensure the bird feeders were full.
