Labelle, Audrie Myrtle
(nee Cross)
Lieutenant Nursing Sister WWII
July 28 1922 - January 21, 2017

Audrie passed away peacefully in the company of her son Geoffrey at Embassy West Senior Living on Saturday, January 21st. On Friday, she seemed to know her time was near, and she had a wonderful and meaningful visit with her son Geoffrey and her daughter Gale.
Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Audrie was the daughter of Arthur and Myrtle Cross (deceased), and sister to Catherine (deceased). Audrie was the beloved wife of Philip Arthur Labelle (deceased), and Mother to Gregory (deceased), Geoffrey (Sharon), and Gale (Neil). Grandmother to: Tanya, Candace, Gregory, Lindsay, Emma, Kent and Drew. GG to Natasha, Tyler, Arianna, Grayce, Anneliese and Addison. Audrie had a very special relationship with her sisters-in-law, Madeleine and Marcelle. She will be dearly missed by all of her family as well as her former daughter-in-law Jackie, and her devoted caregiver Marinel.
Audrie had a wonderful childhood. She grew up in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and spent her summers at the family cottage on Little Lake Magog. It was her special place that she and her father built. She was a tomboy and a natural beauty. Her light shone from within, and she had a feisty, sociable nature. She was an excellent swimmer, fisherman, canoeist, skier, and she loved all animals. At 16, Audrie left home to study nursing at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, received her RN and immediately joined the Army as a Lt. Nursing Sister to serve her Country during WWII. Philip and Audrie met at the Military Hospital in Valcartier, a true wartime romance. When she married Philip, Audrie put her nursing career on hold although she later nursed part-time and served on the Board of Governors for the St. John’s Ambulance as a Nursing Consultant. She was awarded the order of St. John for her Contributions. Philip and Audrie had a wonderful marriage and travelled extensively with military postings to places like Monterey, California, Leavenworth, Kansas, and London, England. Audrie became the consummate hostess, designed and made many of her ball gowns for formal functions. She loved to be fashionable, and her favorite fabric was cashmere of which most of her sweaters were made! She was an excellent cook, pastry chef, knitter, and seamstress. Many times, our Christmas gifts were handmade extensions of her love for her family. Audrie was an accomplished equestrian, and in her 50’s finally realized her goal of owning a horse, “Blackjack”, which she shared with Gale and boarded at the National Capital Equestrian Park (WCP). She loved her Labrador Retrievers (several) and her cats. She also loved nature, and was an accomplished gardener.
Audrie was a wonderful woman. It would be impossible to mention all the ways in which she made our family life special. Nothing in life was half way with Audrie, if she was in, she was all in. She loved deeply, and lived life fully. Her final years were very difficult for her, as she became wheelchair bound and it was hard for her to accept being dependant on others. She moved into Embassy West Senior Living so that she could have her care needs met in a safe and loving environment. We cannot thank the staff at Embassy West enough for the great care they gave Audrie. We are very grateful to know that she was always in good hands, and she made many special friends there. We feel part of that community and will miss many of the staff who have become very dear to us.
There will be a Memorial Service for Audrie on Wednesday, February 1st at 2:00 p.m. at the Pinecrest Remembrance Centre, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa. After the service, the immediate family will attend to Audrie’s burial, and then join attendees for a celebration of Audrie’s life in the Reception Hall at the same location. Please feel free to join us for either portion of the afternoon; all who knew and loved Audrie are most welcome!
In lieu of flowers In Memoriam donations to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute or the Ottawa Hospital Foundation will be appreciated.
