Ann Marie McLeish

Ann passed away at the Ottawa General Hospital on Thursday September 10, 2015 surrounded by family after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. She will be dearly missed by countless family, friends, colleagues and students.

Ann was born in Ottawa on January 22, 1970. She grew up with a natural sporting ability and a great enthusiasm for life while attending Le Phare Elementary School, Henry Munro Middle School, and Colonel By Secondary School. She particularly enjoyed soccer, running and volleyball and was an accomplished athlete in each. Always a hard worker, early in her career she directed and worked at the Circle of Friends Day camp summers in Gloucester, developing an aptitude for self-discipline, leadership and planning. After graduating with a degree in kinesiology at the University of Western Ontario, she realized her calling and went on to Teachers' College (Queen's University). She returned to Ottawa after university and taught at Greenbank Middle School. She was a caring, loving and dedicated teacher always going above and beyond including coaching sports teams, and taking time to support her colleagues.

Ann will be deeply missed by her loving husband Paul Gowans, step son Evan and step daughter Lauren. Ann was predeceased by her mother, Margaret McLeish (nee Light) and also leaves behind her father Dr. William McLeish, sister Sue McLeish and family (spouse David Hamburger, niece Katrina Hamburger and nephew Josh Hamburger), brother Bill McLeish and family (spouse Jennifer Anderson, nephew Liam McLeish). She also leaves behind her dear friend Joss Dennett. She will be missed by her father in law, Stan Gowans and sister in law, Heather McLean and her family.

Visitations will occur at the Pinecrest Visitation Center (2500 Baseline Rd, Ottawa, Ontario), on Thursday September 17 from 7-9pm and Friday September 18, 3-5pm, and 7-9pm. The funeral will be held at the Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel on Saturday September 19, at 2:00 pm followed by the interment of the cremated remains at Pinecrest Cemetery. A reception will follow the interment. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Ottawa Hospital Foundation in support of cancer care. Special thank you to Dr. Clemons and the 5th floor medical care team at the Ottawa General Hospital for their help, guidance and support.
